Bill and Diana Pappas and John and Sandy Newman are pleased to announce the joining of sorts as the Pappas’ retire and the Newmans take over their space at 240 N Hemlock Street in Cannon Beach.

Bill and Diana Pappas have decided to retire JP’s Restaurant after nearly 18 years. They began in the Cannon Beach Hotel location in 1994 and moved to their current location in 2004.

The Newmans will be taking over the lease at 240 N Hemlock as of October 1, 2011. Their concept, although in its earliest stages, is named FISHES Sushi and will feature Asian-inspired style meats, vegetarian and sushi. The concept is based on John’s experience at Silks Restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in San Francisco and FISHES Seafood and Steaks in Pacific City. An opening date has been tentatively set for November 10, 2011. The Newmans will continue to operate Newmans at 988 in Midtown.

May 2011 : American Wetlands Month

In honor of The Wetlands Conservancy’s 30th anniversary, and American Wetlands Month in May, Newmans at 988 along with select restaurants and all New Seasons Markets promoted an “Aqua Plate Special” menu item, featuring seafood whose habitat is dependent upon the health of Oregon’s estuaries, and from which a portion of proceeds were donated to The Wetlands Conservancy.

Newmans at 988 participated by serving wild-caught salmon. For the month of May, 10% of the proceeds of each Aqua Plate Special were donated to The Wetlands Conservancy.

 

Newmans at 988 Welcomes Sous Chef Steven Alldrin

Chef John Newman is pleased to announce the hiring of Steven Alldrin as Sous Chef at Newmans at 988. Steven, 23, comes to Newmans via the Wayfarer Restaurant where he was the Lead Line Cook.

Steven is a 2006 graduate of the Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland. This is Steven’s second tour of Newmans. He was first employed from May 2008 to June 2009. In addition to Newmans and the Wayfarer, he has previously worked on the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. Cooking is in his family. His brother Jason Alldrin is the Executive Chef at Maggies at the Inn at Seaside.

Steven was born in Portland and in his spare time enjoys surfing, gardening, and raising chickens.

Newmans at 988 placed first as the People’s Choice at the November 2nd competition. Next year, Chef John Newman will again be competing for the title of Iron Chef. Proceeds from the event went to support the United Way of Clatsop County.
