Bill and Diana Pappas and John and Sandy Newman are pleased to announce the joining of sorts as the Pappas’ retire and the Newmans take over their space at 240 N Hemlock Street in Cannon Beach.
Bill and Diana Pappas have decided to retire JP’s Restaurant after nearly 18 years. They began in the Cannon Beach Hotel location in 1994 and moved to their current location in 2004.
The Newmans will be taking over the lease at 240 N Hemlock as of October 1, 2011. Their concept, although in its earliest stages, is named FISHES Sushi and will feature Asian-inspired style meats, vegetarian and sushi. The concept is based on John’s experience at Silks Restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in San Francisco and FISHES Seafood and Steaks in Pacific City. An opening date has been tentatively set for November 10, 2011. The Newmans will continue to operate Newmans at 988 in Midtown.

Newmans at 988 placed first as the People’s Choice at the November 2nd competition. Next year, Chef John Newman will again be competing for the title of Iron Chef. Proceeds from the event went to support the United Way of Clatsop County.

The Oregon Zoo presented a fun-filled evening of fine dining and entertainment on Saturday, July 17, 2010. Chef John and Newmans at 988 were featured alongside the region’s top restaurants, bakeries, breweries and wineries. Proceeds from the event went to benefit the Zoo to You youth outreach program.

On Sunday, May 23, Chef John joined other local chefs for Chef’s Night Out. An annual fundraiser for the Cannon Beach Children’s Center hosted by the Surfsand Resort, this annual event was a major success.
An avid surfer himself, Chef John from Newmans at 988 caters for the judges every year at the annual surf contest in Westport, Washington. Come watch the action or participate yourself. For information on future events, contact Pamela Clark.

Appetizers included garlic polenta, mushroom caps & asiago cheese, and Chef John’s famous crab cakes. Dinner courses featured King Fisher Farms Organic Salad Greens, Lobster Ravioli, Rack of Lamb, and Poached Pear for dessert.
