Chef John Newman & his wife Sandy are pleased to invite the public to join in a celebratory dinner Friday, February 5, 2016 to commemorate their 10 year anniversary of Newmans at 988 in Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast. The dinner will replicate the movie classic “Big Night” set in the 1950s on the New Jersey shore & will feature 6 courses with wines. This is their 10th year in recreating the menu featured in the movie.

The movie, “Big Night” was released in 1995 and featured Minnie Driver, Isabella Rossellini, Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoab before they were stars. Chef Primo (Tony Shalhoub) and businessman Secondo (Stanley Tucci) are immigrant brothers from Italy who open their dream restaurant, Paradise, in New Jersey. However, Primo’s authentic food is too unfamiliar for the local tastes, and the restaurant is struggling. Meanwhile, their competitor, Pascal’s has succeeded despite the mediocre and uninspired food there. When famous Italian-American bandleader Louis Prima is scheduled to appear at Paradise, the two brothers put all of their efforts into the important meal, which will likely decide the fate of their restaurant. As they wait for Prima and his entourage to arrive, the diners indulge in the exquisite food and partake in a fabulous celebration.

The meal is centered around one dish “timpano” (or drum) which is a complicated pasta dish which Chef John and his crew present with even more fanfare than in the movie. Also on the menu are soup, a risotto course, a fish course and porchetta and of course dessert. Specially selected Italian wines will accompany each course and be presented by wine maker Aaron Coe.
